sound problems
I have problems with my sound because it mostly sounds rusty and horrible. It almost sounds like my computer is about to freeze up but the game runs smoothly.
got a pentium dual core 2*3GHz
2Gb ram
GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
5.1 sound system
Win XP
I tried my onboard sound card and an external sound card with the newest drivers the sound problems seem to appear only during 3D graphics (no problems at desktop or when i look at the map (m) )
since changing the sound card didn't help i assume it could be a problem with my GF 8800
Has anyone encountered something like this and solved the problem?

First one is the onboard of my Motherboard
:Foxconn P4M9007MB
the other was a simple 5.1 sound card from sansun (nothing special)
the sound problems are the same with both cards.

Have you tried to disable all sound, eg. not using the sansun card, and then going into your mobo's bios and diabling on board sound so you can basically take it out of the equation to the problem.
When you say external sound do you mean like a usb key style sound, or a usb box type of sound? or do you really mean its a pci sound card?
If its a pci sound card before installing it, again disable on baord sound and then install or there could be some conflict.
Before you do this make sure its a clean install, eeg no registry info.

If you know how to use command lines, try using -dsound. It'll change the sound engine used by GW back to direct sound.

external was the wrong description the sansun card is a PCI card.
I tried to disable the on board sound card but didn't find it in the BIOS menus so i just disabeled it at the windows hardware profile. Maybe that is a difference. I will take a closer look at bios this evening
you mean start GW.exe with the command line ....\GW.exe -dsound ? I'll give it a try.

The -dsound command line didn't help.
The sound problems are present at other games as well (like tomb raider anniversary)
I still have no clue where or what the problem is.

If its a problem in other games it deffintly sounds like a hardware/driver issue

Try COMPLETELY removing your old Sound drivers with Driver Cleaner, and install the latrst for you and see if that does anything. Make sure to FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.
